How is Langkawi for Honeymoon?

I visited Langkawi just before I met my wife and when we talked about that trip, she asked me if Langkawi is a good honeymoon destination?

Langkawi is a great honeymoon destination. It’s beautiful turquoise water and sandy beaches, delicious food, and plenty of things to do during both day and night.

Well, that was the short answer. Now, let’s go more into detail why Langkawi is a great option for when picking your honeymoon destination.

Best time of the year to visit

If planning your honeymoon on Langkawi island, then it’s good to know that the best time of year to visit is between the end of October all the way until the middle of April.

If you would like to visit Langkawi for the rest of the year then you should be prepared for a little less sun and more rain.

Tip! Since Langkawi is very popular by people from China, you’ll see a boost in visitors from Chine during their New Year (January or February) which normally triples the cost of the Hotel rooms.

So, to save money you should make sure your dates don’t coincide.

How long should you stay in Langkawi?

Since Langkawi is not a big island, I would say that somewhere between 4-7 days is the perfect amount of time to stay when visiting.

Then you have enough time to relax and enjoy the water, sandy beaches and still have enough time to see the bigger part of what the island has to offer.

Where to stay in Langkawi when on a Honeymoon?

If nightlife and shopping is what’s more important to you then you should stay in or near Kuah.

Being the biggest town on the island, it offers a big variety of things. But (remember there’s always a but) the beaches are not quite as nice near Kuah as they are in many other areas of the island.

If you prioritize the beach then you should look at staying near Pantai Cenang, Tengah Beach in the south or northwest between the Datai Langkawi all the way to Tanjung Rhu Beach.

What hotel should you stay at?

Really tough question to answer because it all depends on budget, what kind of activates are important to you and things like does the hotel need to have a pool or is the only thing that matters the beach?

I advise you to go to hotels.com or something similar and search there and then filter according to your wishes and/or demands.

Honeymoon package in Langkawi?

Sometimes you just don’t want to read-up and all the places, hotels, etc. You just want to have someone do it for you.

Here is one of the companies that offer Honeymoon packages in Langkawi.

The beaches and water in Langkawi

The majority of the nice sandy beaches are on the western and northern parts of the island.

According to me, these are the 3 best beaches in Langkawi:

Pantai Kok

Well, the first beach on the list is for all you couple that likes a little more “bling” in life.

It’s got a luxurious feel to it and that is most likely due to the nice water and sand.

It’s also a great place to be if you ever feel the urge to look at a beautiful sunset with your loved one.

Pantai Tengah Beach

I love this beach since it’s a little less crowded, but not so calm so that there’s nothing to do.

As a matter of fact, when your honeymooners grow tired of starring into each other’s eyes there are plenty of things to see, eat, drink, or do at this beautiful beach.

Pantai Cenang Beach

The next beach on my list is much more crowded but it also offers a much bigger variation of restaurants, bars, things to see and do, and it also has some duty-free shops.

What to do and see during the day?

There is plenty of things to do in Langkawi and if I were to list them all it would take you days to read.

So, with that in mind, I decided to focus on my favorite 3 things under each.

Attractions

Langkawi Sky Bridge

This is one of my absolute favorite attractions to do when visiting Langkawi.

The view combined with feeling the wind and sun in my face is outstanding.

Langkawi Cable Car

If you would like to experience some great views without getting the feeling you’re going to fall to the ground, then you should absolutely take a ride in the Cable Car in Langkawi.

The only downside is that the queue is often very long so make sure to get there early.

Open hours are:

  • Monday – Thursday 10 am – 6 pm
  • Friday – Sunday 09:30 am – 6 pm

Underwater World Langkawi

Not only one of the best-known attractions on Langkawi, but it’s also Malaysia’s largest aquarium.

Here you can see Sharks, Rays, Turtles, and the Amazonian arapaima who’s actually the largest freshwater fish in the world.

Activities

Snorkeling at Payar Island

There are many great places to go snorkeling in Langkawi but I think the best option is to go to Payar Island.

And if you have glasses then you can even rent goggles with a prescription for a little more money.

Motorbike around all of Langkawi

This is probably one of the easiest things to do on the list, you just rent a motorbike for a day or two and just “hit the road”.

Shows

It feels a little poor to only have one show listed but all the other shows that I’ve come in contact with are animal shows, and I do not like seeing the animals in captivity so I would not like to promote them.

And the one show that I have listed is actually very nice.

Oriental Village

Near the base of the Cable Car and the Sky Bridge, you’ll find an oriental village with traditional buildings and small shops.

There are many different shows during the day ranging from musicians playing, martial arts show, etc.

Trips

Langkawi island hopping tour

For the equivalent of about 20 USD and up, you can during a day visit some of the nearby islands.

One of the most popular things to do and often very much appreciated.

Day-trip to Thailand

There are several places in Thailand that are close enough to allow day-tips.

But the only one that I think is worth the money is the one to Koh Lipe.

A beautiful island with very clear water. If possible, you should try to stay the night.

Birdwatching tour

Birdwatching might not be one of the most common things to do when on your honeymoon.

Since Langkawi have a great number of different birds, I am sure you would appreciate it. Make sure you bring your camera/phone so that you can take many pictures.

If you find it interesting then I would like to recommend this service since I’ve only heard good things about them.

Langkawi nightlife

Alright, there are some nightclubs at Langkawi but it’s not really a Party-island.

Since different places open and close all the time I’ve decided to focus more on what you can do in Langkawi if you want to drink, laugh, and socialize.

Beach bars

Many of the beach bars are open all through the day and into the night.

They are a great option if you would like to relax and just enjoy life.

I especially like the ones near or on Pantai Cenang Beach.

Beach Cafes

Compared to the beach bars, the beach cafes are normally a little more “formal” than the beach bars.

You might find a billiard table, but it’s for example not common to find big cozy bags to lay on like you often do with the beach bars.

Night clubs

There are a couple of night clubs in Langkawi and one of the most popular ones is called Antero Langkawi and it’s situated in Pantai Tengah.

If you would like to know more you can find more information on their Facebook page.

Food Night markets

Well, this is absolutely one of my favorite’s out of all the things you could do at night in Langkawi.

You’ll be able to find great-tasting food at really competitive prices.

This is something that I love because then you can test a lot of different dishes and if there’s one that you don’t like, you hope your partner will finish it.

If they won’t, then you just throw it away and attack the next dish.

How expensive is Langkawi?

Although Langkawi is cheaper than Europe or the US, it’s much more expensive than the rest of Malaysia.

I would say that most things cost about 30-50% more than for example Kuala Lumpur, and that seems a little strange since Langkawi is a duty-free island?

One thing that is priced low is actually alcohol, and that is everywhere except the airport that is actually quite expensive.

Shopping in Langkawi

Although there are some things to buy in Langkawi, I normally recommend people buy their gifts on the mainland since it’s much cheaper.

The only thing that is actually. Cheaper is alcoholic beverages.

Tip! There are not that many ATMs in Langkawi so before going there you should “bulk up” on cash if you don’t like paying using your credit card that is.

How to get around Langkawi?

There are several options when it comes to getting around the island and here are the most popular ones.

Taxi

It’s one of the more “expensive” options but while riding along in the tax you’d be able to look, talk, and experience more.

Compared to the US or Europe then taxis are really cheap.

They normally cost about 2,5 USD for a 15-minute drive. Keep in mind that taxis on Langkawi do not run on meters.

Renting a car

Renting a car in Langkawi is actually not expensive and you can rent one from around 25 USD/day.

Renting a motorbike

If you’re ok driving without any real protection, then renting a motorbike is a great option.

Just make sure you don’t go out drinking and then try to drive home. Just stay safe!

Renting a bicycle

Well, Langkawi is very hot so if planning to ride a bicycle then I hope you know how your body reacts when riding a bike in the Langkawi heat.

Langkawi is not dangerous. Sure, you could get hurt when playing water sports or coming in contact with a jellyfish.

Which is best for honeymoon, Langkawi or Penang?

The best short answer I can give is that Langkawi is the best option for a honeymoon.

It has better beaches, water, and scenery.

The only thing Penang has going for it is better restaurants and shopping.
